For the play ‘A Kind of Middle Ages’, we needed to create an unconventional theater setting that departed from the classical stage format dating back to ancient Greece.
I chose to design an elevated theater where the audience, not the actors, is raised. This unique concept enriched the highly specific scenes crafted by playwriter Ilja Leonard Pfeijffer, adding an extra layer of depth to the storytelling.
The two seating platforms draw formal inspiration from the iconic environmental artwork ‘Surrounded Islands’ by Christo and Jeanne-Claude. The location, Bosque del Oma in Kortezubi, Spain, provides a breathtaking natural backdrop, blending seamlessly with the artwork and further amplifying the spectacle of the play.
